Odysseys of Art: Masterpieces Collected by the Princes of Liechtenstein
09.11.2022 – 20.02.2023
Gallery 8

The prestigious collections of the Princes of Liechtenstein were formed over the last four centuries. They rank among the largest and most important private art collections in the world. Presenting more than one hundred masterpieces from the Princely Collections, the exhibition revisits the most significant moments that have shaped the Collections from the seventeenth century up to the present day. It also highlights nearly forty masterpieces by two of the most important European painters, Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) and Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641) of the Baroque period.

This exhibition is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Liechtenstein Princely Collections with LGT Private Banking as Principal Sponsor.

Portrait of Clara Serena Rubens, daughter of the artist

From wealthy burghers and rulers to mythological figures and members of his family, Rubens was adept at capturing his subjects’ physiognomy and psychological state. His depiction of his daughter, Clara Serena Rubens (1611–1623), is one of Rubens’s best-known and most intimate portraits.

Portrait of Maria de Tassis

In Van Dyck’s portrait of her, Maria smiles demurely at the viewer with all her grace and charm. One of his best female portraits, Van Dyck captured not only her physical likeness and disposition but also the various textures of her lace collar, silk gown, pearls, and ostrich feather fan with astonishing realism.

Bust of Marcus Aurelius

Antico seemed to have closely studied works from antiquity during an early trip to Rome. It was perhaps then that he created the portrait bust and equestrian statuette of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (r. 161–180).
