Chinese-style landscape scenes were a significant element that adorned the grounds of Yuanming yuan (Garden of Perfect Brightness), which has now faded into the mists of time, leaving behind fragmented traces in the annals of history. To comprehend the garden’s initial design, in addition to comparing it with other existing sites, it is essential to examine the paintings depicting Yuanming yuan’s landscapes, as they serve as direct evidence. Dr Yang Xu, the curator of the special exhibition “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: YUAN MING YUAN—Art and Culture of an Imperial Garden-Palace”, will provide context of selected paintings, offering an expansive perspective on the Qing imperial garden-palaces and the visual experiences the original sites originally offered. The talk will be concluded by a book signing session, where you can interact with the speaker Dr Yang Xu, who is also the exhibition catalogue’s editor.
This talk accompanies the special exhibition “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: YUAN MING YUAN—Art and Culture of an Imperial Garden-Palace”. The exhibition is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum, the Palace Museum, and the Yuanmingyuan Administration Office of Haidian District of Beijing. It is solely sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
