Major Exhibitions

The Hong Kong Jockey Club is the title and sole sponsor of the HKPM’s major exhibitions, which aim to showcase arts and culture from China and other parts of the world. Past exhibitions include: “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Stories Untold – Figure Paintings of the Ming Dynasty” from the Palace Museum, “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Yuan Ming Yuan – Art and Culture of an Imperial Garden-Palace”.

Talent Development

The museum collaborates with local artists to launch experimental and innovative exhibitions annually. By providing local artists unique opportunities to engage in dialogues with The Palace Museum’s collections, these exhibitions foster new interpretations of The Palace Museum culture. This initiative also offers a platform for the HKPM to nurture local talent across various fields, including curation, design, education, and cultural enterprise. One notable exhibition is “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Dwelling in Tranquility – Reinventing Traditional Gardens”, which features seven new multimedia artworks created by eight Hong Kong interdisciplinary artists and artists’ groups. Combining kinetic elements, multimedia, and sound installations, these works explore and reinterpret the art of the Chinese garden, a cherished tradition. Through fresh perspectives on The Palace Museum culture, the exhibition offers visitors a multi-sensory experience.

Art & Technology (Artech) Education

Annual educational programmes are launched to integrate arts and technology while focusing on Chinese arts and culture. Working in collaboration with experts and organisations from various fields, this project provides unique opportunities for students and the public to learn more about Chinese arts and culture through creative and interactive methods.

Major Exhibitions

BOCHK sponsors various exhibitions at HKPM, underscoring the museum’s mission to promote Chinese art and culture locally and globally, while developing Hong Kong into an East-meets-West centre for International Cultural Exchange as outlined in the National 14th Five-Year Plan. Following the inaugural exhibition, “Gazing at Sanxingdui: New Archaeological Discoveries in Sichuan” sponsored by BOCHK on view from late 2023 to early 2024, Bank of China (Hong Kong) Presents: “The Origins of Chinese Civilisation” special exhibition is the HKPM's second special exhibition in the series of “The Origins and Development of Chinese Civilisation”. This exhibition underscores the origins, continuity, inclusiveness, and unity that define the enduring legacy of Chinese civilisation.

HKPM SHOWTIME Carnival

Soley sponsored by BOCHK, HKPM Showtime Carnival collaborates with top-tier performing arts organisations and artists to present a series of events featuring diverse themes. The performing groups include the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Dance Company, Hong Kong Gaudeamus Dunhuang Ensemble, Hong Kong Enharmonica, among others.

The Carnival features exciting performances, demonstrations, workshops, and self-learning activities that invite the audience to experience the Museum’s exhibitions from various perspectives, exploring topics related to Chinese art and history, as well as the dialogue among world civilisations.

HKPM tickets to the underprivileged

To further support the HKPM’s community engagement efforts, BOCHK has been sponsoring general admission and special exhibition tickets since the museum’s opening. These tickets are distributed to underprivileged groups through the non-governmental organisation (NGO) partners and schools, providing people from different backgrounds the opportunity to visit the museum and gain new insights into Chinese art and culture.

“A Dialogue Between Dunhuang and Palace Museum: Beyond the Bounds of History” , concert and cultural lecture event

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the opening of the HKPM in 2022, BOCHK sponsored “A Dialogue between Dunhuang and Palace Museum: Beyond the Bounds of History”. This concert and cultural lecture event was co-organised by the HKPM and Hong Kong Gaudeamus Dunhuang Ensemble. Drawing inspiration from the cultural heritage of Dunhuang and the Palace Museum, the orchestra’s two resident composers have created a large-scale orchestral suite with rich narratives and deep allegorical significance.

The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) entered into a three-year partnership with Cathay in 2023, as its exclusive Travel Partner. Not only does the partnership help solidify Hong Kong’s position as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange, but it also gives a significant boost to Hong Kong’s cultural tourism.

The partnership with Cathay supports the WKCDA in various ways, including the provision of air travel services for transporting exhibits for exhibitions hosted by the Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) and M+, and for inbound and outbound travel for overseas and local artists participating in the WKCDA’s performing arts programmes. The partnership also provides support to enhance the content and quality of the WKCDA’s exhibitions and programmes, along with publicity enhancement to help promote WKCD as a must-see destination in Hong Kong to members of the public both locally and internationally.

Cathay supports HKPM’s Special Exhibitions, including “The Adorned Body: French Fashion and Jewellery 1770–1910 from the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris” (26 June through 14 October 2024), and “The Forbidden City and the Palace of Versailles: China-France Cultural Encounters in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries” (18 December 2024 through 4 May 2025).

Ticketing Scheme for the Underprivileged

Since opening in July 2022, HKPM has launched the “Ticketing Scheme for the Underprivileged”. This initiative collaborates with corporations, social welfare institutions, and organisations to distribute free admission tickets to underprivileged families, students, senior citizens, and people with special needs. It aims to provide these groups with valuable opportunities to explore the treasures of Chinese culture and the world.

The scheme has received ongoing support from our strategic partner, the Bank of China (Hong Kong), since the museum’s inception. Additionally, generous contributions from companies, organisations and benevolent individuals—such as Cartier, Kerry Properties Limited, Federation of HK Jiangsu Community Organisations, Friends of Hong Kong Association, HK Federation of Fujian Associations, Simon Suen Foundation, and Dr Martin Lee Ka Shing, Chairman of Henderson Land Group—have been instrumental in making this scheme a success.

“Art Journey for Youth at HKPM” School Group Visit Programme

Co-sponsored by Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and Greater Bay Area Homeland Youth Community Foundation, “Art Journey for Youth at HKPM” School Group Visit Programme provides primary and secondary school students in Hong Kong, particularly those from underprivileged families, with opportunities to visit the Museum. Since the 2022/23 school year, more than 80,000 students and teachers have participated.

As part of the “Art Journey for Youth at HKPM”, the Museum also hosted Student Free Admission Days, offering 8,000 complimentary tickets to Special Exhibitions across four designated days in September and October 2024. This initiative aims to foster appreciation of Chinese cultural heritage, as well as art treasures from around the world among local primary and secondary students.
