The “Ancient Egypt Unveiled: Treasures from Egyptian Museums” Special Exhibition explores significant discoveries in modern Egyptian archaeology, including the global debut of major discoveries from the past decade of Egyptian-led excavations at Saqqara. This talk will analyse ten unpublished painted anthropoid wooden coffins from these finds.
As the burial ground of Memphis, the first capital of ancient Egypt, Saqqara saw repeated peaks of tomb construction and became a centre of archaism, or the revival of past styles. This also explains why the largest cache tomb to date was found on this site. The ongoing publication of thousands of preserved painted coffins will challenge the current Thebes-centred typology of wooden coffins.
This talk accompanies the special exhibition "Ancient Egypt Unveiled: Treasures from Egyptian Museums", which will be on view in Gallery 9 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum from 20 November 2025 to 31 August 2026. The exhibition is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt.
