Idioms are concise, refined phrases that have been precipitated and honed through the long course of Chinese language and culture through the tempering of time. Some are rooted in profound historical allusions; others capture subtle shades of meaning. Often carried by metaphor and enriched through extension, they embody the crystallised wisdom of the Chinese people across millennia.
A seasoned guardian of the Palace Museum treasures, the speaker brings deep erudition and a unique perspective to carefully select one hundred idioms, breaking new ground with an original framework. After years of dedicated effort, the book weaves the teachings in idioms together with the classics and knowledge of the treasures from the Forbidden City. In doing so, it interprets and reshapes the essence of traditional Chinese culture, opening a dialogue across time and space between language and heritage. Additionally, Mr Li Zhongmou, Deputy Director, Collection and Learning of the Hong Kong Palace Museum, will moderate a conversation with the speaker.
Organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum, the “HKPM Master Talk Series” invites experts from around the world with outstanding research achievements in the fields of art and culture to offer multi-perspective and comprehensive explorations of the history and academic values of their respective fields. The series further fosters mutual exchanges between China and the West, bringing new life to the Chinese traditional culture.
