Freestyle ink painting is a traditional style of elite painting in China that has been passed down for two millennia. Boasting a long history, the genre not only requires delicate and elegant brushwork to express its rich cultural content, but also emphasises the connection between artistic qualities and personal character. Painting in this style is thought to cultivate character, and the brushwork is thought to embody personality. These make this art form relatively highbrow. This talk aims to provide a pathway for understanding and appreciating Chinese freestyle ink painting.
Organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum, the "HKPM Master Talk Series" invites experts from around the world with outstanding research achievements in the fields of art and culture to offer multi-perspective and comprehensive explorations of the history and academic values of their respective fields. The series further fosters mutual exchanges between China and the West, bringing new life to the Chinese traditional culture.
