HKPM Opening Exhibition Talk Series: Building the Hong Kong Palace Museum Collection

Starting from the late nineteenth century, Hong Kong became both a prosperous metropolis and a hub for collecting Chinese art. Hong Kong collectors took the lead in supporting public museums with great enthusiasm and generosity, promoting Chinese art at home and abroad and establishing the city as a unique centre for cultural exchange.

Danny Ching, Assistant Curator of the Hong Kong Palace Museum will start with an introduction to the history of Chinese art collecting in Hong Kong and the curatorial concepts of the Museum’s opening exhibition “Private to Public: History of Chinese Art Collecting in Hong Kong”, outlining the historical context of the subsequent panel discussion. Moderated by the Hong Kong Palace Museum Deputy Director Dr Daisy Yiyou Wang and Head Curator Dr Tianlong Jiao, five contributors to the Museum’s founding collection, including Betty Lo and Kenneth Chu (Mengdiexuan Collection), Anthony K.W. Cheung (Huahaitang Collection), Lawrence Chan (Dawentang Collection), and Grace Wu (Jiamutang Collection), will share stories and insights from their collecting career, as well as their aspirations for promoting and preserving Chinese culture.

This talk accompanies the opening exhibition “Private to Public: The History of Chinese Art Collecting in Hong Kong“ in Gallery 6 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum.
