How does the Detection and Analysis at the Conservation Department of the Palace Museum integrate the latest technology with traditional techniques to restore the historical appearance of artefacts?
In the first session of the talk, Wang Chunlei, Head of Detection and Analysis at the Conservation Department of the Palace Museum will present a case study of a Diancui headdress from the Palace Museum’s collection, illustrating the research techniques and procedures for mould removal and prevention, which are essential in introducing the preservation of organic artefacts.
Ren Meng, Research Associate will delve into the composition and characteristics of decorative and treatment materials in lacquer and wooden artefacts in the next session. It will cover analytical procedures and data interpretation for identifying organic components, such as lacquers, dry oils, natural resins, waxes, and protein adhesives (animal glue) in artefacts.
This talk is in line with the Hong Kong Palace Museum Conservator-in-Residence Programme 2024–2025, a government-funded programme that aims to raise public awareness of innovative strategies for the conservation and management of artefacts.
