Compartmented boxes and tray dishes are now used for packaging snacks and storing confectionery or ingredients for spring rolls during the Lunar New Year. This type of food vessels first appeared in the Lingnan region during the Western Han dynasty (206 BCE–9 CE) and gradually spread to the rest of China as well as neighbouring countries, varying greatly in both material and design. This talk will present the history of compartmented containers, discuss how their designs relate to their functions, and explore what this type of food vessels tells us about the eating practice in China.
