HKPM Talk Series | Technological Characteristics of Brocade Weaving in Han Dynasty

The Han dynasty marked a flourishing era for China’s silk industry, during which significant advancements took place. Key developments included major improvements to the drawloom, the emergence of complex Han brocade structures, and the remarkable artistic innovation of integrating Han characters with decorative patterns—unprecedented developments that invite deeper exploration and appreciation.

This talk will explore various aspects of Han brocade, including fabric structure, loom construction, craft techniques, and pattern characteristics. It will also highlight the Han brocade artefacts unearthed at the Niya site in Xinjiang, showcasing the refinement of ancient silk craftsmanship.

The talk is part of the Hong Kong Palace Museum GS Visiting Fellowship Programme sponsored by the GS Charity Foundation. It is an in-residence programme aiming at fostering professional exchange and collaboration among scholars and specialists around the world.
