Palace Theatre: Whisper of Treasures (Family Workshop)

12.01.2025 – 09.03.2025
Magnus Hall, Palace Academy

Travel back in time to experience the cultural exchanges between China and France in the 17th and 18th centuries with your children through a storytelling theatre.

What you and your children will get from this workshop:

  • Discover History: Through storytelling, you will gain an understanding of the knowledge exchange in science, astronomy, and art between the two masters of the Forbidden City and the Palace of Versailles— the Kangxi Emperor and Louis XIV.
  • Experience Handicrafts: Get creative and use craft materials to create ‘object puppet’ theatre props resembling exhibition artefacts, such as astronomy instruments and porcelain objects, and design their characters using imagination!
  • Collaborate and Perform: Work together as a family and play a role in the family palace theatre show!

Please note:

  • No prior experience in artistic creation is required.
  • Suitable for children aged 5–12. Each child must be accompanied by an adult. No additional registration is needed for the accompanying adult. Each group may consist of up to two people, and each group will receive one set of materials.

This workshop accompanies the special exhibition “The Forbidden City and The Palace of Versailles: China-France Cultural Encounters in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries” on view in Gallery 9 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum from 18 December 2024 to 4 May 2025. The exhibition is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum, the Palace Museum, and the Palace of Versailles. The exhibits mainly come from the Palace Museum and the Palace of Versailles. The exhibition is financially supported by the Mega Arts and Cultural Events Fund under the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government.
