Shadow Puppet-making Workshop (Family Workshop)

20.07.2025
Magnus Hall, Palace Academy

From art appreciation to shadow puppet-making, experience how significant historical events were captured in court paintings and bring history to life through role play using shadow puppets. Together, let’s become masters of theatre performance and travel back to the world illustrated in Qing dynasty albums!

What you and your children will get from this workshop:

  • Understanding Chinese and Western Art: Learn about different perspective drawing and painting techniques in Chinese and Western art, and see how the court painters in Qing dynasty integrated these characteristics into their works.
  • Explore Multi-Narratives: Appreciate the unique multi-spatial storytelling approach depicted in the paintings and gain a holistic understanding of the narratives presented by the court painters.
  • Create Shadow Puppet Theatre: Unleash your creativity by illustrating your own characters and crafting shadow puppets under the instructor’s guidance. Collaborate to bring the stories alive and stage a captivating storytelling performance!

This workshop accompanies the thematic exhibition “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: The Art of Armaments — Qing Dynasty Military Collection from The Palace Museum”. The exhibition is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and The Palace Museum. It is solely sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
