Hong Kong Palace Museum takes a major step forward as main construction works commence

The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) announced today that it has awarded the Main Contract for the Hong Kong Palace Museum (“HKPM”) building to China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited. The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) announced today that it has awarded the Main Contract for the Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) building to China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited. The Main Contract includes the construction of the entire HKPM building complex. Designed by Rocco Design Architects Limited, the HKPM building superstructure will begin construction in April 2019 and is expected to be completed around end of 2021.

Located at the western tip of the WKCD, the HKPM will be a museum dedicated to showcasing the exquisite artefacts from the Palace Museum’s collections and collaborates with other museums and cultural institutes in such aspects as research, exhibition, education and public programmes. The museum comprises 7 600 square metres of gallery space for standing and special exhibitions. Through different themes related to world civilisation and Chinese culture, collections of the Palace Museum including imperial artefacts, ancient Chinese Art and historical documents will be displayed. Other museum facilities include a 400-seat lecture theatre, activity rooms, a restaurant and a shop.

The West Kowloon Cultural District is one of the largest and most ambitious cultural projects in the world. Its vision is to create a vibrant new cultural quarter for Hong Kong on forty hectares of reclaimed land located alongside Victoria Harbour. With a varied mix of theatres, performance spaces, and museums, the West Kowloon Cultural District will produce and host world-class exhibitions, performances, and cultural events, providing twenty-three hectares of public open space, including a two-kilometre waterfront promenade.

Event snapshots

The HKPM superstructure will begin construction in April 2019 and is expected to be completed around end of 2021.
