The mid-Ming painter Tang Yin (1470–1524), also known by his courtesy name Bohu and his sobriquet Liuru Jushi, was a man for all seasons. He excelled in poetry, prose, calligraphy, and painting and was celebrated as one of the Four Talents of Jiangnan and one of the Four Masters of the Wu school. His life experiences and artistic achievements have made him a legendary figure. This exquisite exhibition features several paintings by Tang and his contemporaries. Its curator Dr Fangting Jiang will explore Tang’s art and life drawing insights from the paintings, while the other curator Dr Meng Qiao will focus on a painting by You Qiu (active in the 16th century), who inherited Tang Yin’s figure painting style. Dr Qiao will further analyse the ancient bronzes and porcelains depicted in the paintings, elaborating on the late-Ming fascination with antiques.
