Chan Oi Ying is a Chinese calligraphy artist and private class tutor. In her undergraduate studies, she majored in Chinese Calligraphy, including seal, clerical, regular, semi-cursive, and cursive scripts. She also took courses related to ink art, such as traditional landscape, figure, and bird-and-flower painting. During her university studies, her supervisor was Professor Kam Tang Tong, and now she is learning Japanese calligraphy with Hekison Amano.
Once recognised with the Chinese Calligraphy Award by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Chan has created calligraphy works for several institutions, such as the Hong Kong Palace Museum, RTHK, Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association, United Overseas Bank Limited, Art and Piece Magazine, Mill Milk, Trial & Error , and more.
Quoting Sun Guoting, a Chinese calligrapher in the Tang dynasty, one should “learn from the past, move on with the times.” In the context of calligraphy, the most valuable thing about it is that it inherits the tradition without losing touch with modern times. This quote illustrates the spirit of Chan’s dedication to the art of Chinese calligraphy.
