“The Comprehensive Investigation into the Origins and Early Development of Chinese Civilisation” (commonly referred to as “The Origins of Chinese Civilisation Project”) is a state-supported, multidisciplinary major research initiative focused on Chinese history and ancient culture.
In this talk, Wang Wei will present findings and research from investigations at various archaeological sites, including Liangzhu in Zhejiang, Shimao in Shaanxi, Taosi in Shanxi, and Shijiahe in Hubei. He will provide a multidisciplinary overview of the development of civilisations in these different regions, examining factors such as environmental contexts, subsistence strategies, social stratification, and inter-civilisational exchanges. Additionally, he will explore the formation processes, the models and mechanisms involved, as well as the developmental paths and characteristics of the “diversity in unity” pattern of Chinese civilisation.
This talk accompanies the special exhibition Bank of China (Hong Kong) Presents: “The Origins of Chinese Civilisation” on view in Gallery 8 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum from 25 September 2024 to 7 February 2025. The exhibition is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and Art Exhibitions China, and sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong), the Museum’s strategic partner.
The talk will be livestreamed on the online platforms of the HKPM WeChat Video Account, as well as CMG Radio The Greater Bay.
* The exhibition catalogue (Traditional Chinese version) is now available for sale at the Museum’s gift shop ART EXPRESS by The Commercial Press (G/F).
