The Museum of Islamic Art, Doha (MIA) relaunched in 2022 following a major renovation, fourteen years after it first opened to the public in 2008. MIA Director Shaika Al-Nassr will speak about how the museum’s reimagined gallery spaces and new storylines enhance visitor experience and engage a new generation of audiences, particularly children and their families. She will also discuss MIA’s role in attracting tourists to Qatar and in helping the country build international relationships around the world.
MIA Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs Dr Mounia Chekhab-Abudaya will also provide an overview of the exhibition “Imperial Threads”, which was previously presented in 2016 at MIA, and highlight the significance of the upcoming Hong Kong edition of the exhibition titled “Wonders of Imperial Carpets: Masterpieces from the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha”. She will also be outlining the history of artistic exchange between Safavid Iran, Mughal India, Ottoman Türkiye, and China, as well as introducing some of MIA’s greatest masterpieces.
This talk accompanies the special exhibition “Wonders of Imperial Carpets: Masterpieces from the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha”, which will be on view in Gallery 9 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum from 18 June to 6 October 2025. The exhibition is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha, presenting around 100 treasures from the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, along with precious objects from the collections of the Palace Museum and the Hong Kong Palace Museum.
