Horse-themed Chinese Ink Painting Workshop (Children and Youth)

The Palace Academy Summer Art-venture Series

The horse has been an enduring and beloved theme in Chinese painting for generations, symbolising resilience, agility and nobility.

This workshop draws inspiration from the exhibition “Heavenly Horses: Masterpieces from the Palace Museum”. Under the guidance of the instructor, you and your child will closely appreciate fine horse paintings from different dynasties, learn and practise traditional Chinese painting techniques. By focusing on the horse paintings by Zhang Mu, a famous Lingnan painter from the 17th century, you will learn to appreciate his distinctive style of refined line and light ink, which vividly captures the physiques, demeanour, and personality of horses. You will replicate his classic work Two Horses and create your own ink horse painting.

In this workshop, you will experience:

  • Horse Painting Appreciation: Through a guided thematic tour, discover the artistic tradition of Chinese horse paintings and learn to appreciate artworks from multiple perspectives.
  • Skill-building: Explore fundamental ink painting techniques including composition and colour application and experience the charm of ink painting.
  • Parent-and-child co-creation: Create a unique horse painting through parent-child collaboration, featuring the image of fine steeds and expressing creativity.

Please note:

  • The workshop is suitable for children and teenagers aged 5–15. Participants below 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult. No additional ticket is needed for the accompanying adult. Each group may consist of up to two people.
  • The organiser reserves the right to cancel the event in case of an insufficient number of participants. Ticket fee will be refunded in full in accordance with the procedures.
  • The workshop is open to participants of all skill levels. No prior experience is required.
  • Exhibition Ticket Arrangement: This registration fee includes standard admission tickets. Participants may visit Galleries 1 to 7 on the day of the event (except those temporarily closed).
