This talk explores the development of the Chinese navy, covering the hundred years before and after its formative period. Topics to be explored include the Qing Imperial Tributary System, the impact of the European Industrial Revolution, and China's complex interactions across diplomacy and conflict. The speaker will uncover lesser-known stories behind the rise of China’s modern navy, drawing evidence from microhistorical research, historical archives, and artefacts.
This talk accompanies the thematic exhibition “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: The Art of Armaments — Qing Dynasty Military Collection from The Palace Museum”. The exhibition is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and The Palace Museum. It is solely sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
The talk will be livestreamed on the online platforms of the HKPM WeChat Video Account and Museum Headlines.
