Between the 1560s and 1660s, the Mughal dynasty (1526–1857) experienced a “golden age” that spanned the reigns of the three emperors: Akbar (r. 1556–1605), Jahangir (r. 1605–1627), and Shah Jahan (r. 1628–1658). During this vibrant period, highly skilled artists and craftsmen in the court workshops produced a radically new and rapidly evolving style of art. This distinctly “Mughal” approach to design reflected the hybridity and cosmopolitan nature of the Mughal court.
In this talk, Emily Hannam, Curator for South Asia at the V&A, will explore the artistic exchanges across South Asia, as well as with China, Iran, and Europe that contributed to the flourishing of Mughal art.
This talk accompanies the special exhibition “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Treasures of the Mughal Court from the Victoria and Albert Museum”, which will be on view in Gallery 8 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum from 6 August 2025 to 23 February 2026. The exhibition is jointly organised by the V&A and Hong Kong Palace Museum, and is solely sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
Approximately 100 treasures from the V&A Collection, supported by loans from Kuwait, UK, and other international collections, range from paintings to jewellery, architectural fragments, weaponry, textiles, and ceramics. The Hong Kong Palace Museum, the Chris Hall Collection at the Hong Kong Palace Museum, and the Collection of Mengdiexuan also provide important loans.
On the day of the talk, there will be Islamic calligraphy live demonstration sessions to be held at 2:30 pm-3:30 pm and 4:00 pm-5:00 pm outside the 2/F South Atrium of the HKPM.
