The Hong Kong Palace Museum Collections and Collectors Talk Series | Wong Kwan Shut: A Life in Connoisseurship and Art

The late Mr Wong Kwan Shut (1934–2026) was a preeminent connoisseur and scholar-artist based in Hong Kong. From 2025 to 2026, Mr Wong Kwan Shut and his spouse Mrs Wong Pong Chi-ying generously donated his collection and works to the Hong Kong Palace Museum, leading to the thematic exhibition “Joyful Encounters: The Connoisseurship and Art of Wong Kwan Shut” (“Joyful Encounters”). In this talk, Mrs Wong Pong Chi-ying and Dr John Yiu, Deputy Director, Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole at The University of Hong Kong, will be joined by Dr Wangzhang Zhu, co-curator of the “Joyful Encounters” exhibition. They will share the artistic and academic journey of Mr Wong Kwan Shut, delving into his achievements in artistic creation, connoisseurship, and scholarship in Chinese painting and calligraphy, as well as his significant contributions to the global promotion of the art form. The speakers will also introduce selected works that Mr Wong and his spouse, Mrs Wong Pong Chi-ying, generously gifted to the HKPM.

This talk accompanies the thematic exhibition “Joyful Encounters”, which is on view in Gallery 6 until 23 November 2026.

“The Hong Kong Palace Museum Collections and Collectors Talk Series” aims to shed new light on the art collecting and creative journeys of the HKPM donors, inviting audiences to appreciate the aesthetic, historical, and cultural significance of the many outstanding works donated to the HKPM. The talk series will also highlight the rich art-collecting cultural traditions of Hong Kong and its unique position as a centre for Chinese art collecting and research.
