On view at the Hong Kong Palace Museum from November 2022 to February 2023, the 400-year-old Princely Collections of Liechtenstein is one of the most important private art collections in the world, containing major works of European art spanning five centuries. Its holdings include works by great artistic personalities such as Raphael, Adrian de Fries, Peter Paul Rubens, and Friedrich von Amerling, ranging from sculpture, painting, to cabinet of curiosity.
In this talk, Dr Johann Kräftner, Director of the Princely Collections, offers a survey of the history of the Princely Collections, starting from Prince Karl I von Liechtenstein at the beginning of the 17th century to the current reigning Prince Hans-Adam II von und zu Liechtenstein, and explores the societal role of art collecting intertwined with monarchy, family, finance, war and more.
This talk accompanies the exhibition “Odysseys of Art: Masterpieces Collected by the Princes of Liechtenstein” in Gallery 8 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum. This exhibition is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Liechtenstein Princely Collections with LGT Private Banking as Principal Sponsor.
