Pierre Rainero, Director of Image, Style and Heritage of Cartier, will portray a key character in Cartier’s history: Jeanne Toussaint, the first female Creative Director of the Maison, from 1933 to 1970. He will explore Jeanne Toussaint’s personality and what she brought not only to the Maison but also to the jewellery field more globally: she was a woman of her times who created for women of her times. She sensed and predicted the changes underway in the society she lived in and anticipated the desires of her customers. Through her jewels, she offered women a way to express their new freedom. Jeanne Toussaint was nicknamed “The Panther” and made it an emblem for Cartier. She left an indelible mark on twentieth-century jewellery. Yau Sum Yin, Assistant Curator of the Hong Kong Palace Museum will be in conversation with Pierre Rainero at the end.
This talk complements the Special Exhibition “Cartier and Women” in Gallery 8, on view from 14 April through 14 August 2023 at the Museum. As the first major exhibition on the unique role and influence of women in the history of Cartier, it showcases around three hundred stunning treasures created by Cartier including precious jewellery, timepieces, objects, accessories, and archival records from the nineteenth century to the present day, and illustrates the impact of Chinese aesthetics on the development of women’s lifestyles and global fashion. This exhibition is organised and curated by the Hong Kong Palace Museum with the support of Cartier.
